The NC Conference proudly salutes new Global Mission Fellow Marcharkelti McKenzie (#3022000). “Mo”, as she is affectionately called, was commissioned July 19, 2014 in the Philippines, by Bishop Hope Morgan Ward. She begins working at the Open Doors ministry in Mobile, Alabama on August 25, 2014. Global Mission Fellows are young adults, aged 20-30, committed to engaging local communities, connecting the church in mission, and growing in personal and social holiness.
“Mission to me is living out your calling and using your life story as a tool. I love working with youth and young adults, helping them through the season they are currently in. Mark 16:15 says, ‘Go into all the world and proclaim the good news to the whole creation.’ I live my life by those words. Mission is going out to be with God’s people.”
When describing her faith journey, Marcharkelti writes of academic difficulties due to dyslexia and associated low self-esteen. She dropped out of college and was homeless for awhile. Her journey changed when she realized she was God’s child. She became determined to use her story to minister with others. Marcharkelti re-enrolled in college, became involved with youth ministry, and finished her college degree. She says, “I felt that God was pulling me up. One day the secret came to the light and there was no stopping her.”
Prior to becoming a Global Mission Fellow, Marcharkelti worked under Deaconess Melba McCallum as an AmeriCorps VISTA volunteer at Partners in Ministry in East Laurinburg, NC. Mo is a member of Jerusalem UMC.
Part of Generation Transformation, Global Mission Fellows is one of two initiatives of UMC Global Ministries specifically designed for young adults. Global Mission Fellows replaces the former US-2 and Mission Intern programs as an opportunity for two years of mission service. Global Justice Volunteers provides young adults aged 18-30 with two months of summer missionary service. Small teams spend eight weeks exploring the relationship between faith and social justice, in partnership with local grassroots efforts in the USA and around the world. Additionally, young adults may serve as a Global Ministries individual volunteer, in a flexible array of settings.
