Bishop’s Gatherings

Dear NCC clergy friends,

Grace and peace to you in the name of Jesus Christ.

I look forward to convening gatherings of clergy in the eight districts as this summer draws to a close.  These times together are a blessing to me as I see you and gain refreshment through the colleagueship we share in ministry.  My hope is that you will also be refreshed, connected and strengthened as we gather.

During our time together, we will focus on the theme of this conference year:  From Strength to Strength:  Give!  In preparation for our time together, I ask that you read and reflect on two texts:  Psalm 84 and II Corinthians 8-9.

 No good thing does the Lord withhold from those who walk uprightly. – Psalm 84:11

God is able to provide you with every blessing in abundance, so that by always having enough of everything, you may share abundantly in every good work. – II Corinthians 9:8

The schedule of gatherings in the districts is provided below.  If you are unable to attend the gathering in your district, you are invited to attend in a neighboring district to be a part of this conference-wide conversation. Our goal is to grow in generosity in response to grace upon grace—God’s inexhaustible gifts to us through Jesus Christ.

connections: Year Of Prayer

Bishop Ward talks about the year of prayer unfolding across our annual conference in this Connections video.

Grace and peace to you in the name of Jesus Christ. I thank you for the prayers that you offer for one another, for our church and mission in the world, and for God’s people in every place.

A year of prayer is unfolding across our annual conference. Beginning in the Beacon District, a pilgrimage of prayer began in August. The new district superintendent, Gil Wise, gathered on the courthouse in every county in the Beacon District. People came and prayers were offered for the churches, for the community, for Christ’s mission in the world for all God’s people.

The baton then passed to the Sound District, where similar gatherings were held in the counties of the Sound District. And now the baton is in the Harbor District. It will move from the Harbor District to the Gateway District and on around the conference until June. In this way, we are all invited, in various ways, to pray for one another and for our mission in the world.

Paul wrote, “Give thanks to God and pray at all times without ceasing.” Thank you for your daily prayers for Christ’s mission in the world and for the life we share together.

connections: Journey Over The Past Year

Bishop Ward talks about the journey between the 2012 and 2013 Annual Conferences as the NC Conference has moved into 8 districts.

Christ’s peace and grace and strength to you, as you live as Christ’s witness in the world.

Very soon we will gather at the 2013 session of the North Carolina Annual Conference. It will be a birthday of sorts, a first birthday for 8 districts, created by an overwhelming vote of the North Carolina Annual Conference 1 year ago.

It’s been a journey of experimenting, of learning, of listening, of watching, of growing, and of conversation, as we have sought to strengthen our new life together.

One of the ways in which the Cabinet and I have engaged this opportunity, is a series of retreats, led by Gil Rendle. We met in these retreats with the Cabinet of the Western North Carolina Conference and with Bishop Goodpaster.

The Western North Carolina Conference also moved in the last couple of years to a structure of 8 districts. The 8 District Superintendents in Western North Carolina and the 8 District Superintendents in the North Carolina Conference have been prayer partners across this year.

As we met together, we have shared our experiences of the new structure, our questions of ways in which to make our lives together and in mission more effective and more fruitful, and we decided, in both Annual Conferences, to create district mission strategy teams.

As we gather for Annual Conference, let us give thanks for the journey, and let us give thanks for the ways in which we are learning day by day, to follow Christ faithfully, in this time, and in this place.

I look forward to seeing many of you in Greenville very soon and for being engaged with others of you on the web as Annual Conference unfolds.

Forms Change for Moving Pastors

Starting this year, there will be a new process for moving pastors submitting moving expense forms.

There will be three online forms, which will be found on the District Website (on the right side listed under “Pages”).

The three forms are:

  1. Clergy Moving Expense – Request for Advance – this form is only filled out if the pastor needs an advance of funds before they move
  2. So You’re Moving – this checklist form is required. See below.
  3. 2013 Itinerant Clergy Moving Expense Requisition – this form is required if moving expenses are to be reimbursed

There will be a field in the 2013 Itinerant Clergy Moving Expense Requisition that will allow the pastor to upload their scanned receipts and documentation that is required for reimbursement.

The Clergy Moving Expense – Request for Advance from is the only form, at this point, that is available on the district website. The other two forms will be available on the district website in the next couple of weeks.

There will also be a PDF version of the “So You’re Moving” checklist for pastors to leave for the succeeding pastor, Chair of SPRC & Chair of Trustees on the District website. The Assistant to the District Superintendent of each moving pastor will receive a copy of the “So You’re Moving” checklist, in case follow up is needed for any problem areas.

A change for some pastors this year, the “So You’re Moving” checklist is required and the pastor’s moving expenses will not be reimbursed until this form is submitted to the District Office through the online submission form.

“In Acts 15:36, Paul asks Barnabas, “Come, go with me. Let’s go visit the believers.” It is in the spirit of this text that I begin this week visiting with clergy in the eight districts of our Annual Conference.

Laity, this is an important time for those of us who are clergy to gather and think together about ways in which we lead the mission of our church. I hope that you will be praying for your pastor and for our corporate life, as we gather as clergy leaders.

These gatherings will begin with worship at the Lord’s Table. We’ll move into a time of Bible study, when we pray that God’s Word may speak to us afresh.

We will also think together about the covenant of clergy life, about the way our lives, grounded in Christ and supported by one another, may through the grace of God, be worthy for this ministry to which we are called. We will think together about ways in which to advance our mission together, growing from strength to strength, as we serve God in the world. We will pray for wisdom, so that we might be strong servants of Christ, working with laity across our Annual Conference for vital congregations in every place.

It is always a blessing to me to be in the Annual Conference among the laity and the clergy. I am always blessed. I always learn. I am always inspired.

I look forward to this new journey with you. Clergy, I look forward to seeing you soon and laity, again, I thank you for your prayers.”

Districts to Meet with Bishop Ward

The District gatherings are a time when laity and clergy can be in dialogue with Bishop Ward.

During the meetings, Bishop Ward will share an overview of her ministry and then will encourage laity and clergy to tell her what God has placed on their heart. If clergy and laity in one district cannot be present for their district meeting, feel free to attend another district meeting.
