Peace with Justice

Grants:
Operation of the program is funded by the Board’s budget with funds for Peace with Justice grants coming from the retained portion of the offering on Peace with Justice Sunday, which “witnesses to God’s demands for a faithful, just, disarmed, and secure world.”

Eligibility:
To apply for grant funding from the Peace with Justice Program, the applicant must be a United Methodist local church in the North Carolina Annual Conference or an ecumenical group / organization working with and through a local United Methodist congregation.

Guidelines for Funding:
There  shall be a clearly demonstrated need. When appropriate , the grant proposal shall show evidence of long-range planning for the project with priorities, goals, realistic time line, and measurable objectives in evidence. The grant proposal should contain a detailed budget for the project and if this is an ongoing project, the budget must contain plans for future funding. Funds granted by Peace with Justice do not necessarily commit the Board to ongoing funding of any project or activity. This limitation, however, does not preclude the Board from considering repeat applications from previously funded agencies, local churches, and community organizations.

Criteria:
Applicants must work toward achieving at least one of the following objectives:

  • Objective 1: Assist United Methodists in understanding and responding to violence and militarism and in moving and leading nations and peoples to reconciliation, transformation, and redemption.
  • Objective 2: Involve and develop principled leaders among United Methodists and enjoin the public in efforts to tend conflicts, human rights violations, and violent aggression around the world.
  • Objective 3: Promote just national and international policies and actions (governmental and non-governmental) seeking to address systemic poverty and restore communities to sustainability.
  • Objective 4: Support policies that promote systemic economic justice and the self-development of peoples, in particular to respond to the disproportionate effect of injustices on racial, indigenous, and ethnic persons.

Procedure:
Download the Project Description Document (PDF file) with the application requirements. Read that thoroughly and create a document with your responses to the requirements. Then complete the PWJ Grant Application (below) and upload the document with your request.

All applications are reviewed by the Conference Board of Church and Society. Submission of application does not guarantee funding. Maximum amount of award: $3000.
